Nick on the Rocks

Missing Rock Record on Vancouver Island

Season 7 Episode 1 | 7m 54sVideo has Closed Captions

On a special beach outside of Nanaimo, B.C., 200 million years are missing from the rock record.

Much of Vancouver Island is covered by a layer of 230-million-year-old basalt, but erosion at select beaches has exposed layers of both older and younger rock that tell a story of continental collision and massive gaps in the rock record.
