It dispenses naloxone, commonly known as NARCAN, a nasal spray that reverses overdoses, plus fentanyl test strips and basic hygiene items.
SHAWN MINTER: And I actually was able to get one of the Narcan products out, but that's when I realized it was free.
And all you had to do was put in your zip code and the quantity and punch in the number for the item that you wanted.
KEYRIS MANZANARES: Data shows that in 2023, nearly 300 Richmonders died from an overdose.
With two machines currently located at Marshall and Southside plazas, city leaders and residents are hopeful these resources will give more people access to life saving supplies.
SHAWN MINTER: With them being strategically placed throughout the city, I think it gives those who may be dealing with opiate addiction an opportunity, or if someone that want to intervene if they see someone thats dealing with an overdose.
KEYRIS MANZANARES: The city plans to install another vending machine in the East End this summer, with more planned by the end of the year.
